Safety this Christmas
Shoppinginmeath.blogspot.com would like to congratulate Meath County Council on their initiative for fire safety this Christmas entitled the 12 days of Christmas:
1. Check that your Christams lights conform to European Standards. Always use a residual current device (safety device that can save lives by instantly switching off power) on outdoor electrical equipment.
2. Never place candles near your Christmas tree, cards, decorations or furnishings.
3. Make sure your family and visitors staying for the festive period know what to do in an emergency. Make a fire escape plan.
4. Decorations can burn easily - dont attach them to lights, heaters, candles or place around a fireplace.
5. Never overload electrical sockets. Take special care with Christmas lights. Always switch Christmas lights off and unplug them before going to bed.
6. Celebrate Christmas and New Year safely. The risk of accidents, especially in the kitchen, is greater after alcohol is consumed.
7. Most fires start in the kitchen - never leave a cooker unattended.
8. If you are planning to celebrate with licenced fire works, store them in a metal box, read the instructions, never go back to lit firework and keep a bucket of water near by.
9. Make sure cigarettes are completely extinguished before going to bed.
10. Check the battery in your smoke alarm every week and use Christmas as a reminder to clean it and remove dust.
11. Keep candles, lighters and matches out of the reach of children. Never leave burning candles unattended.
12. Take time to check on elderly relatives and neighbours this Christmas - make sure they are fire safe.
If you detect a fire, get out, stay out and get the fire brigade out.

Shopping on Line with Tesco
I was shopping in Tesco in Navan today, very busy. Anyway as I was doing my usual mystery shopper routine I noticed a woman walking along the isle with a special trolley that had several crates on board. The woman was moving along and with great ease and deligence she was filling the crates. I watched for a while before approaching, I asked the woman if she would explain what she was doing. She was very pleasant and informative. She explained to me that this was the manual end of shopping on line, she explained that she was given the shopping lists of people who had ordered on line and she filled their orders, this delivery service she told me cost 4 Euro per person. I have to say that I was very impressed by this young woman's attitude and professionalism and the way she cared for her clients orders certainly made me think about shopping on line. And of course the benifits add up, no parking charges, no hassle and no impulse buying - you know - I will get those choclate biscuits because the kids love them - now really!

Unclaimed tax refunds
Hundreds of thousands of workers who pay union dues, refuse charges, medical expenses, rent for a house or apartment and many other qualifying tax allowances don't claim relief on the payments - with millions of Euro in tax refunds remaining unclaimed every year.
The Revenue's own figures indicate that the average payout from overpaid taxes is a substantial 667 Euro per person per year.
The good news is that you can go back and claim for the last four years. Based on the Revenue average you could have 2,500 Euro due to you.

Crime
This week it is reported that Meath has the second highest rate of burglaries outside of Dublin. It is therefore important that we take every step possible to make it impossible for the burglar to enter your property. If you have gates at the entrance to your house secure those gates with a pad lock and chain, this is not expensive and shows the burglar that your are serious about protecting your property. If a person other than those legally allowed ie the Gardai were to break that chain or lock then it is a crime, it is trespass. If burglars see an open gate this in their mind is the first invitation to them to commit their crime. Insure that all windows and doors are secured on the inside, if one of the latches is not working then get it fixed, generally burglars don't like to break glass as it brings unwanted attention, they like it simple so don't make it simple.
Don't leave anything out side that can be used by the burglar, don't leave a chair beside a window or anything else he/she can stand on, don't leave a rock, hammer or anything else that the burglar can use to break the window, keep a clean and tidy yard/garden. Many burglars know their trade and may not come tooled up for the job, when they go to court they use this as mitigation (my lord I did not go with the intention of burglary - its was opportunistic - this gets him/her a lighter sentence).
Have an alarm fitted or fit one yourself if you are competent to do so, there are a wide range of alarms on the market, you can even buy small alarms for each individual door and window and these are very cheap, shop around, if you can afford it get a professional in. Always keep your vehicle keys in a safe place, many burglaries are now committed simply to get access to keys to steal vehicles. Keep all valuables in a safe place and don't tell anyone where that safe place is.
You can buy a good safe that can be fitted under the floor boards or into the wall, this is a worth while investment for your jewellery etc. If at night you hear something that you think is suspicious, call the Gardai, don't confront anyone yourself, the Gardai are happy to come to your assistance and they wont be too bothered if it is a false alarm, better safe than sorry. These are just a few simple tips.

Value at Tesco
Today I visited Tesco in Ashbourne and Navan. Both stores were busy and well stocked with Christmas goodies, 7.5kg of new season potatoes 2.99 which is very good value, loose bananas 0.85 per kg which is a good bunch for 1.00. Good quality cat food in pouches 15 cent (beef in jelly) cat loves it. White sliced loaf still at 55 cent which is just great. Sauce mixes such as creamy pepper 46 cent. Sea side special - four nice pieces of fish for 1.34, I have tried these and they are very tasty. I treated myself today to sirloin steak, enough to feed two for 5.00 now thats not bad 2.50 per head for a nice meal. Fesh low fat milk is today 1.79 in Tesco and this is a sticking point for me as Super Value are selling the same milk for 1.39, the other sticking point for me is the standard can of coke, I know its a luxury item however its my weakness and I want to know why I am paying 0.68 for it in Tesco when it is 0.50 in the wee shop next door to Tesco in Navan Shopping Centre, come on now Tesco lets see cans of coke for 0.50 for Christmas, I know that the six pack is 3.09 but when your carrying a 7.5kg of spuds you just want a wee drink not the watering hole.
