Lidl - New Store in Navan
LIDL BRINGS IRELAND’S LOWEST PRICES TO NAVAN!
Lidl, Ireland’s Number 1 discount retailer and “Ireland’s Cheapest Supermarket” according to the
National Consumer Agency, opens its new store in Navan to the public from 8am on Thursday,
February 18th.
The store will serve Navan and the surrounding areas with high quality food at amazing low costs
and fantastic non-food specials as well as creating 13 jobs in the area. From Thursday, 18th until
Sunday, 21st of February there will be a massive 50% off on all fresh fruit and vegetables. Special
opening offers include half price digital cameras and drum kits, and huge reductions on items like
table football sets, golf sets and patio heaters ! From Thursday until Sunday the new Navan store
will be a hive of activity as everyday there are special events planned for customers.
To celebrate the opening, customers are in for a special treat as they have the chance to win €50
in Lidl vouchers on the Lidl “Wheel of Fortune”! No one goes away empty handed – if you don’t win
the top prize of your money back in Lidl vouchers then there are trolley keyrings, sweets and
delicious praline seashell chocolates to be won.
On Saturday a massive Happy Family Day will take place with loads of free family fun activities for
all ages! Kids will be amused by a treasure hunt, bouncy castle and face painters, to name but a
few, between the hours of 11am and 6pm. On Friday and Sunday delicious doughnuts and hot
dogs will be available on each day respectively as another treat to welcome all our new customers
to Navan!
Paul Regan, District Manager for the Navan store, speaking at the announcement of the opening
said, “I am really looking forward to welcoming all of the Navan locals to our new store. Lidl are
delighted to be Navan’s first discount retailer and to bring Ireland’s lowest prices to the town. We
have so many exciting activities planned for the opening, there really is something for everyone
and it promises to be a great local event for all the families and anyone else who wants to come
along and join the fun!”
Lidl Philosophy
Lidl has a simple philosophy – focusing on offering customers top quality products at the lowest
possible price. In achieving this, Lidl seeks to keep overheads to a minimum and eliminate any
unnecessary costs. Savings are then passed directly on to shoppers, who can expect huge price
differences from other major supermarkets. As part of Lidl’s policy to avoid hidden charges and to
further promote responsible behaviour, Lidl has charged for plastic bags since opening its first
store in 2000 – an approach later adopted by the Irish Government.
In addition to stocking their own top quality range of products, Lidl also features big household
brands like Coca Cola, Heinz, Cadbury and Weetabix to name only a few.
Lidl’s Weekly Specials
Every Monday and Thursday sees new weekly specials appear in Lidl stores. These items are
exceptionally low in price and offer something for all the family. Lidl customers have come to
expect an extensive range of equipment with higher specifications than some of the best-known
household names. These non-food specials have become enormously popular with the Irish public.
N ews Release
Lidl’s commitment to Ireland
The new Navan store will be serviced by a purpose built 44,000 metres squared Regional
Distribution Centre in Mullingar. The retailer will also celebrate 10 years in the Republic later in
2010. Lidl is committed to using as many indigenous suppliers as possible in the production of its
own brand items and is proud that its Inisvale range of beef is 100% Irish Bord Bia Quality
Assured.
Lidl also has joined forces with the Irish Heart Foundation to raise vital funds that will help spread
the message about heart health and educate consumers about the benefits of leading a healthy
and active lifestyle. The Lidl Fit Factor is a 4 week programme for 3rd and 4th classes in primary
schools created by Lidl. The fun programme has a €15,000 prize fund and is free to participate in,
currently over 20,000 children are signed up to take part. Leinster and Ireland international rugby
player Jonathan Sexton has signed up as a judge for the Lidl Fit Factor as well as Tipperary hurler
Eoin Kelly and sports commentator and broadcaster George Hook.
Another initiative Lidl has undertaken is to promote sustainable fishing practices with the Marine
Stewardship Council (MSC) whereby Lidl offers an approved range of fish products carrying the
blue eco-label that signifies the produce comes from a sustainable fishery. This range is constantly
being extended to offer consumers more choice of eco-friendly fishing products and is part of Lidl’s
continuing Corporate Social Responsibility programme ‘On the Way to a Better Tomorrow’.
Already approximately 2,500 people are employed by Lidl in the Republic of Ireland between
stores, Head Office and the 3 Regional Distribution Centres. Furthermore, Lidl has developed an
internationally recognised Retail Management Degree Programme with Dublin Business School to
add to its workforce in Ireland. Lidl also offers a Graduate Management Trainee Programme and
the company was highly ranked in the 2009 ‘Top 100 Leading Graduate Employers’ by
GradIreland.com.

Waste Disposal
County Meath is quickly becoming a skip due to the illegal dumping in our county. For God's sake people we want people to come from all over the world to visit our county, who will want to come and spend their time in a skip. I know that waste disposal is expensive and the Government's proposed VAT is not going to help. But please contact the council if you are in real difficulty dont dump your rubbish on our door step.

Customer Service
This morning 6/2/2010 I was in Tesco on Navan, busy, staff busy and helpful. Two of my favourite good value items are not available, 3 for 10 Euro meat which usually includes chops, mince and stewing steak. 3 packets of mince of 10 Euro is not good value, we want value and variety. The other item is the 15 cent cat food pouches. Chicken at 5 Euro good value but I think we have had it cheaper than this before. The chicken kievs are good value, but at the checkout the 2 for 1 offer did not come up on the screen and I had to waste my time at customer service to get it sorted out.
Still have not recieved my last batch of vouchers relating to my club card even though the points have been taken off according to my receipts.
Halfords:
I am never disappointed with the service at Halfords in the new Industrial estate. The lads know their stuff and are extremely helpful. I do wonder however if another member of staff could be on duty on Saturday mornings, staff can be stretched and this causes irritation for those of us who are busy.
Dunnes in Navan have a number of special offers at the moment, but again their meat offers are nothing to write home about. The cereals and bread are still good value.
Heatons in Navan shopping centre was not a happy place for me this morning. I simply went in to buy a CD I had been told about and which had been widely advertised on TV. Firstly it was not there and had never been there. Secondly, I settled for another CD and went to the checkout. The two staff members at the checkout were chatting away to each other and I was standing there for at least five minutes before I was served. I was the only one at the checkout and this poor service infuriated me.
I think that many shop staff are suffering from "Glad we are here syndrome". This is where the staff think that the shopper should be glad these half sleeping creatures are there to serve us rather than the other way round.
If our businesses cant offer goo customer service, what else have they to offer. My hope is to curtail people going to Newry and Blanch and shop locally, however, unless businesses get their act together Meath will become a retail wilderness. Now shake up and wake up.

Poolbeg Incinerator
The Oireachtas Committee on Environment, Heritage and Local Government’s ongoing examination into the construction of a waste incinerator at Poolbeg, Dublin will continue tomorrow (3rd) when the Dublin City Manager, John Tierney and representatives from Covanta Energy, the company contracted to operate the facility will attend the meeting. The meeting will take place at 2pm in Committee Room 3 of Leinster House. Last week, the Committee met with the Irish Waste Management Association who claimed the scale of the project was too large, that it was too expensive and would cost the taxpayer dearly.
Reservations have also been expressed regarding the nature of the contract between Dublin City Council and Covanta. It has been claimed that the contract guarantees the incinerator a definite quantity of waste per annum, should this quantity not be reached, the council would have to pay compensation to Covanta. Committee Chairman, Se n Fleming TD said; “The waste incinerator has proved to be a highly controversial project. Opposing sides have made strong claims regarding the scale and size of the plant as it is currently envisaged, while concerns have also been raised about the potential cost to the taxpayer and the impact it will have on other waste operators.
The Committee is anxious to try and establish some facts surrounding this contentious issue so will be interested to hear what Dublin City Council and Covanta as the company who will develop the plant have to say.”
